ABOUT STILLPOINT PHOTOGRAPHY
: I gave my photography the name "Still Point Photography" after an exhibition in Melbourne several years ago. Two couples who bought and hung my work in their homes made very similar comments, summarised: "When we walk into the room where the image is hanging we find it gives a calm, still and restful atmosphere; we feel at peace". The concept of the "still point" within, from where all inspiration and action arises, came to mind. (See the link at the bottom of this page)
: I try to create images that speak of the hope, the beauty & the mysteries in the world around us.
I use basic equipment & simple techniques, but I don’t reject new technology. I have embraced the digital revolution that has entered all our lives; however I feel that the equipment used is secondary to my main goal, which is to
“keep it simple & keep it true".
“SIMPLICITY IS THE ESSENCE OF THE GREAT, THE TRUE & THE BEAUTIFUL IN ART" ~ George Sands
: In my photographic journey I drew my artistic inspiration from many people, such as the Canadian photographer, writer and educator, Freeman Patterson, and his marvellous body of work in images and teaching; and also from the work of a 20th century Trappist monk by the name of Thomas Merton, who was not only a seriously interesting author, but also a remarkable photographer. Merton spoke eloquently of a "hidden wholeness" within all things, and he sought it, and revealed it, in his photography and in his writings.
: I have been involved in group & solo exhibitions in NZ & Australia and in February 2009, I enjoyed a gratifying response to my retrospective exhibition "Abstractions, Creations, Derelictions", at the Augustine Centre, in Melbourne, Australia. I have participated in several group exhibitions since then. I am also a regular participant in the local Surf Coast Arts Trail in August each year, during which I open my studio/workspace to the public for a weekend. It is a great opportunity to meet people interested in the arts, and to have feedback on my work.
: My images have been published in magazines in USA & Australia. My Cards & Prints are sold in galleries, environment & gift shops, and now also here on the Internet.
: I also have a stall at the Community Market at Winchelsea, the village in which I live, just half an hour west of Geelong. This market happens the first Sunday of each month throughout the year, in and around the lovely old bluestone building in the centre of town. The building has a great history and it is now Winchelsea's Community Centre and hosts many events including this great little market. I love meeting people interested in photography, so I really enjoy the opportunity these markets provide for me to show my work and have interesting and informative conversations with people who stop to look and talk.
