"Even in Darkness There is Light"

This image was made outside the Tourist Information Centre at Lake Pukaki in the South Island of New Zealand. Not sure why it caught my eye at the time, but many moons later, back in Australia, I felt it might just meet the requirements in an Art Competition with the theme of "Hope". organised by a Mental Health support group. I had to submit a brief explanation along with the image. I hadn't thought much about the image before or after taking it, but somehow when I read the brief for the competition, I immediately thought of this image and it seemed just right. This is what I wrote...

"With mental health issues there is a very real “darkness” in the complexities of the mind that can’t, and shouldn’t, be denied, but even in that darkness there is always some light. To see that, is to have hope, and to have hope is to be able to begin the healing process. This image suggests the complexity of our life and mind, and that there is a beauty in that complexity, and that there is some light, even in the darkness. That is part of that beauty. There is light in the orange leaves, and even amongst the shadows on the rock; and there are also green leaves suggesting the potential for new growth. It is a dark and complex scene in which there is a beauty in the light, which brings hope. You may also see there may be beauty in the darkness and the complexity."

Oh, and by the way, I was so pleased to win first prize in the Show...
